What are some things a well-designed building or space can’t exist without? Any ‘designed’ building or space must fundamentally function effectively for the people who live and work there, and to ensure this is done ‘well’ the needs of the users must be put at the forefront of the design process. As architects we have the task of bringing to ‘function’ the beauty of ‘form,’ and we safeguard this with a vision towards future use, adaptability, and sustainability.  A ‘well-designed’ building or space cannot exist without these elements.

What makes a successful team? Under the wings of a good leader, a successful team is made up of respectful members, who work collaboratively to achieve common goals, and getting there by agreeing upon and following the common roadmap.  Successful teams recognize and appreciate each other’s strengths. They communicate well, are not afraid to ask questions, and reach out to each other for help when needed.

What’s the highest compliment a client could give you? The highest compliment anyone could give me boils down to one simple phrase: “Let’s work together again.”

What might people be surprised to know about you outside of work? I am a BIG Star Trek fan!  I have great memories of sitting in front of the television with my family watching weekly episodes while growing up. I appreciate the show’s premise of bold exploration, respect for societal differences, and ‘big picture’ problem solving from multiple perspectives.

What’s your idea of perfect happiness? I believe that Happiness should not be an idea; it should be found in the present. In addition to being an architect, I am a mother of two amazingly energetic and bubbly children. For me, happiness is being able to weave ‘creative time’ into my family life – building things out of random materials, gluey fingers, drawing, questioning, taking things apart, doing this all together with my children and husband.

What are the most beautiful/interesting/exciting things in your job? There are ‘magical moments’ in every architectural project. For me personally, it’s during the concept design stage of a project when we have the opportunity to meet with End User Groups. It’s a privilege getting to know people, their workflows, functional relationships and needs. Synthesizing, testing, and successfully assembling the crucial ‘pieces of the puzzle’ is a fantastic process to lead and be a part of.

Could you share one piece of advice to young females who have a passion for the design/architecture industry? Being a female in the architecture industry requires perseverance and nimbleness; long hours, being able to quickly jump from one job/ task to another and voicing your perspectives and opinions. If you are also a wife / mother / caregiver, this means juggling family responsibilities and obligations as well. During hectic times, it’s important to strive for personal balance, believe and be true to yourself. Have confidence – go for it and speak up!
