If you were to describe Lisa Bate to someone who hasn’t met her, you’d use words like tenacious, optimistic, and strategic. Adopting a big picture perspective, Lisa unpacks the complexities that are inherent in every project she works on to identify key objectives that may not have otherwise been considered. By applying a comprehensive project methodology from visioning through design and construction, to measuring performance in occupancy, Lisa optimizes design solutions to help our clients build and develop their people, culture, and business portfolios. Her focus is on ROI, Return on Planet and ROHC (Return on Human Capital) to ensure the best sustainable design and technical performance.
Lisa and her firm joined B+H in 2007 and her design and project management experience spans across Canada to China, the US, the Caribbean, SE Asia, and India. From 2012 to 2015, she was based in Shanghai as B+H’s Managing Principal, China and EVP, Asia. Lisa has built trust with her clients and colleagues over the years by being an active listener who uncovers the most important elements of the goals for every project and tailors the process to deliver on them. Her focus on project schedules and design quality – coupled with her determination to innovate for high performance and a commitment to lifelong learning – tie all the pieces together to inform strategic, successful outcomes.
Through solutions-based collaboration, an important part of our role is opening up possibilities for our clients where they may not have seen an opportunity before.
Lisa is a passionate advocate for environmental, economic, and social sustainability, in addition to achieving gender parity within the industry. As B+H’s Global Sustainability Lead, she recognizes how important her role is not only in the context of our firm and the broader SJ Group of companies, but also as a trailblazer for other “green” women within the industry. Her leadership roles on large-scale complex projects include the firm’s delivery of over a dozen LEED Platinum to Silver certified venues for the 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games, and our first two Net Zero Carbon design and operational certified projects, the Joyce Centre at Mohawk College and the retrofit of Building Nx at Humber College. Industry advocacy/advisory experience includes being the first female Chair of both the World Green Building Council (2015-2021) and the Canada Green Building Council (2007‐2013). Lisa currently represents the Surbana Jurong Group of Companies on the World Green Building Council Corporate Advisory Board (ongoing), as a member of the Women in Infrastructure Network (WIN) International Committee and the Urban Land Institute.
Lisa has helped mentor many future leaders in the design and construction sector. Lisa’s global experience blended with supporting our North American studios and her time in Asia equips her with a global perspective of how to serve our clients, grow their business, grow our business, and deliver meaningful projects.
