Looking back at her career path, Karoline Rakowska finds her passion for drawing was what sparked her interest in the field of design. Ever since she was young, Karoline could easily entertain herself with nothing more than a pencil, a piece of paper and her imagination. Little did she know that her knack for drawing and ability to communicate through design would later lead her to embark upon an artistic career path in the design industry.

After graduating from university with a Master’s degree in architecture and urban design, Karoline began her career as a design architect in her hometown of Warsaw, Poland. Her adventure didn’t stop there. An avid traveler, she has traveled extensively throughout Asia along with her husband and fell in love with Asia’s world city – Hong Kong – where she decided to relocate to to advance her design career, and has been for the past eighteen years.

Design at its heart is about solving problems. This process requires designers to analyze everything from studying the function of the space to implementing the client’s requirement.

Perhaps it’s the love for travel that drew her into the hospitality design sector – Karoline has completed nearly thirty high-end hospitality interior projects across Asia, including internationally renowned luxury 5-star hotels, casinos, clubhouses and residential developments. She finds it truly inspiring to engage in the design process of a project “from the raw to finish.” The beginning stage of a project where designers are often tasked with concept creation and spatial planning is what she deems as the most exciting part about her work. Her understanding of space and form from her background in architecture, along with her innate flair for colors, spatial arrangements and textiles enables her to create truly inspiring and thoughtful design solutions for her clients.

Karoline joined our CHIL studio in Hong Kong in 2019 as the Design Director, Asia, bringing over twenty years of experience in interior design, leadership and project management. Apart from leading our teams of interior designers, she is highly involved in all stages of the design process – from developing comprehensive interior design concepts, through producing construction documentation, to handling contract administration. In addition to her well-honed eye and extensive experience in hospitality design, Karoline’s ability to establish a trusting relationship with clients and key stakeholders helps her ensure the successful delivery of projects.

Karoline is also a member of CHIL Interior Design, the hospitality studio of B+H.
