What is something a well-designed building/space can’t exist without? People! At the center of a well-designed building is a concept that responds to the ‘human’ factor; who is using this space, how will they be interacting with it, how can we improve their experience, and how do we want to make them feel? As a member of the Healthcare Team, this human factor is a part of our ethos to design spaces that support not just patients, but also families, staff, and visitors. Our mission is to improve the human experience through design and create spaces that can contribute to physical and mental well-being for a wide spectrum of users.

What makes a successful team?

There are many great attributes that help make a successful team, but I think a big one is confidence. There is great comradery formed in having confidence in your team members and leadership, allowing everyone the opportunity to bring their strengths together. A successful team needs to foster an environment that allows members to confidently offer opinions or ask questions to support collaborative thinking and design. Finally, confidence in the vision or end goal can act as a guiding light for a team during a long project, keeping focus and morale to deliver a successful design.

“There is space for you, as you are. Your uniqueness is a great asset as a designer, and you should lean into your values, your creativity, and your interests to help guide you into a role you will feel fulfilled in”

What’s your idea of perfect happiness?

For me, two things come to mind: The spontaneous moment, and the grind. There is perfect happiness in enjoying a beautiful view, or my dog sitting on my feet. But the happiness that comes in the moments you’ve worked long and hard for and failed at many times in the process (like playing a song perfectly, a positive habit, or a new personal best) is pretty wonderful.

Could you share one piece of advice for young women who have a passion for the design and architecture industry?

There is space for you, as you are. Your uniqueness is a great asset as a designer, and you should lean into your values, your creativity, and your interests to help guide you into a role you will feel fulfilled in.
