Role Overview:

You will be responsible for leading the financial operations and controllership functions, including financial reporting, compliance, internal controls, and financial systems. This role will partner with other senior leaders to ensure that the organization’s financial operations are efficient, compliant with regulations, and aligned with strategic objectives. The position will oversee a team of finance professionals and ensure that accurate and timely financial information is available to support decision-making.

 

Role Responsibilities: 

Financial Reporting and Accounting

  • Oversee the preparation of accurate, timely, and compliant financial statements, including monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.
  • Ensure accuracy and timeliness of financial reporting across the organization.
  • Ensure timely completion of internal and external financial reports, including supporting schedules and disclosures.

Statutory returns and compliance

  • Provide financial documentation and support for compliance-related applications including insurance renewals, grant funding or regulatory filings.
  • Ensure timely filing of all statutory returns (e.g. GST/HST, Corporate Tax, payroll remittances, WSIB, and etc.)

Internal Controls and Compliance

  • Develop and maintain a robust system of internal controls to ensure the integrity of financial data and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Identify potential financial risks and develop strategies to mitigate them.
  • Oversee compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) or other regulatory frameworks, ensuring all required documentation and testing are in place.
  • Lead efforts for external audits, preparing necessary documentation, and ensuring compliance with audit requirements.

Accounting Oversight

  • Oversee the company’s general accounting operations, including managing the general ledger, month-end and year-end close processes, and reconciliation of accounts.
  • Review and approve journal entries and account reconciliations to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Manage the consolidation of financial statements for multiple entities, if applicable.

Operational Efficiency

  • Drive continuous improvement in financial processes, systems, and procedures to increase efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Oversee and manage day-to-day finance operations, including accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and financial systems.
  • Collaborate with IT and operations teams to streamline financial systems and automation.

Budgeting and Forecasting

  • Manage the budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes.
  • Work closely with business leaders to align financial plans with strategic goals and operational needs.
  • Analyse financial results and provide actionable insights to senior management for decision-making.

Strategic Financial Analysis

  • Provide insights and recommendations on financial performance and trends to senior leadership.
  • Develop and maintain key financial metrics and KPIs to monitor the health of the organization.
  • Support business case analysis for capital expenditures, investments, and other strategic initiatives.

Team Leadership

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the finance operations and controllership team.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, high performance, and professional development within the team.
  • Set clear goals and expectations for team members, ensuring alignment with department and organizational objectives.

 

Education & Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting, or a related field. A master’s degree in business administration (MBA) or a CPA, CMA, or other relevant certifications is preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in finance, accounting, or financial operations, with at least 5 years in a leadership or director-level position.
  • Strong experience in financial reporting, controllership, internal controls, compliance, and operations.
  • Proven experience in managing financial systems and working with cross-functional teams.
  • In-depth knowledge of GAAP, SOX, and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • CPA or CA
  • Knowledge of SAP and Tagetik will be an advantage
  • Proficient in MS Office applications
  • Proficient in financial modelling and advanced Excel
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Senior level financial management expertise, including taxation, compliance, reporting and legal issues.
  • Sound knowledge of accounting practices and standards gained through practical experience, qualifications and personal development.
  • Sound leadership skills and a proven track record of successful people management.
  • Ability to actively manage and drive performance in diverse teams and cultures. Good interpersonal and communication skills, able to work with stakeholders across different divisions and regions
  • Strong business acumen, detail-oriented and hands-on.
