In Memoriam: Tõnu Altosaar
B+H remembers Tõnu Altosaar with deep respect and gratitude.
For 57 years, Tõnu was part of the fabric of B+H. Across nearly six decades with the firm, he made an extraordinary contribution not only to our practice, but to the architectural profession and the city of Toronto.
Tõnu’s impact can be seen across the skyline and public realm he helped shape. Through his work and collaborations, he contributed to some of the city’s most recognizable places and landmarks, including the TD Centre, First Canadian Place, Toronto Eaton Centre, BCE Place Galleria, the Royal Ontario Museum, and more recent work such as TD Terrace at 160 Front.
But Tõnu’s legacy extends far beyond the buildings themselves. He was a gifted designer, a connector, a mentor, a colleague, and a friend. He brought people together with ease, warmth, humour, and a presence that filled every room he entered. For Tõnu, the relationships formed through the work were just as meaningful as the work itself.
Members of the B+H team were honoured to attend Tõnu’s celebration of life on June 4, 2026, joining his family, friends, colleagues, and peers from across the industry to pay our respects.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Tõnu’s family, friends, and all who knew and loved him. We are deeply grateful for his remarkable legacy, his enduring impact on B+H, and the joy, generosity, and humanity he brought to a life dedicated to design.
