In the mid-1990’s, the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) assumed responsibility of Toronto Pearson International Airport. As part of their initiatives to better serve passengers, shippers, and airlines through strategic accommodation of the increasing number of passengers making their way through the airport, the GTAA developed The Pearson Airport Development Program. They determined that a complete redevelopment would work best to address the steady annual increase in passengers.
The Infield Development Project was part of this program and was designed to meet the current and future needs of the tenants displaced by the projects underway to redevelop major terminals and the airport’s airside capacity. Affecting 470 acres between four major runways, this $250 million development was Canada’s largest design-build project and was comprised of six structures including the Air Canada Cargo Terminal, a three-bay hangar facility, and an eleven-gate infield hold-room terminal.
