An iconic 7-star hotel at the new Bund Financial Centre, Shanghai Wanda Reign Hotel is the new centrepiece for the Historic Bund and serves as a cultural gateway from the old to the new as The Bund extends to the south. This boutique hotel creates an elevated and glamorous experience on Shanghai’s most famous street. Its landscape design epitomizes the “Pearl of the Orient” through its contrast of jade and shimmering reflection—captured through the reflective nature of water combined with the seasonal embellishments of nature.
With architecture designed by Foster + Partners, our Shanghai Planning and Landscape studio worked collaboratively to establish a landscape design that complements the bold architecture through a refined experience that creates a sense of elegant drama from the very point of arrival. As visitors arrive and transition between indoor and outdoor spaces, the landscape informs their journey through sculpted and scalloped granite elements combined with elegant and timeless stainless steel details.
Shanghai Reign includes a series of hidden and exclusive VIP landscaped terraces featuring intricate topiary and the natural sensuality of wood, transporting visitors into the rich garden history of Shanghai. Creating privacy and elegance in the VIP areas, a sculpted water wall—an abstract polished stainless steel wave—delicately cascades water around these exclusive spaces, denoting its area. Meanwhile, a privacy wall facing the street shields views into a VIP area while a bronze and stainless steel floral sculpture visible to passersby gives a glimpse of the luxury within.
Influenced by the architectural history of The Bund, the arrival plaza and reception to the hotel embody a contemporary Art Deco flair. Prominent at the entry, a sculptural interpretation of the lotus flower in stainless steel is gently concealed in an elegant mist to provide a cloud of mystery as one enters the hotel lobby. The detailed paving design reflects the linear elements of the façade, adding another level of detail to the pedestrian experience as the landscape extends its signature iconic design into Shanghai’s history.
