How has the architecture & design industry evolved in terms of gender diversity since you began your career, and what changes would you like to see in the future?

In the span of my career, I’ve observed a meaningful evolution in the gender landscape of the architecture and design industry. I feel very lucky that., women have been playing diversity roles in the field when I initially started in the U.S.. It was very heartening to see this as a young architect by the time, and the positive trajectory continues toward greater inclusivity and representation over time. One significant change I’ve witnessed is the increased presence of women in leadership positions within firms and institutions, especially here in B+H. This shift has not only inspired aspiring female architects and designers but has also diversified perspectives, leading to more innovative and inclusive design solutions.

Additionally, there has been a notable emphasis on fostering a supportive and equitable work environment through initiatives such as mentorship programs and flexible work arrangements. Looking ahead, I’m optimistic about the future of our industry and the potential for further progress in gender diversity. By remaining committed to building an environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to succeed, we can build a future where architecture and design truly embrace the talents and contributions of all individuals, regardless of gender or background.

“Leadership used to be all about being assertive and making tough decisions. Things are different now. Nowadays, effective leadership is about more than just being tough—it’s about empathy, collaboration, and understanding others.”

From your perspective, how has the idea of leadership transformed, and in what ways do you believe women can play a role in reshaping and redefining leadership within the workplace?

Leadership used to be all about being assertive and making tough decisions. Things are different now. Nowadays, effective leadership is about more than just being tough—it’s about empathy, collaboration, and understanding others. Women are often great at things like communication, building relationships, and finding common ground—all crucial for today’s leaders. The team feels more inclusive and supported by bringing these strengths to the table. We bring a unique perspective and set of skills that can really shake up the idea of leadership for the better. By embracing these qualities and advocating for change, they can help create workplaces where everyone feels valued and heard.

What makes a successful team?

A successful team represents collaborative efforts. It begins with a well-defined vision, a shared understanding of the project’s objectives, smooth communication, and very importantly willing to support your teammate. It is always fun to work with different perspectives, skills, and backgrounds as it enriches the team’s collective creativity and problem-solving abilities. Communication serves as the mortar that binds the team together. Team members must openly share ideas, concerns, and feedback to ensure alignment and progress.
