As our Senior Project Architect, you will be joining our B+H Architects Healthcare team based in Toronto Studio as part of a group focused on the planning, design, and delivery of healthcare sector projects of a variety of sizes and through a mix of delivery models. As an experienced practitioner within this group, your role will manage the technical and production aspects of a project, from the initial design to the final construction. The ideal candidate is keen to be an active participant in mentorship and take part in the continual growth and development of themselves and team members. You will work with senior leaders within the firm to advance our practice and produce award-winning and successful projects.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities will include but may not be limited to the following:

  • Leading creative designs of complex architectural projects in consultation with the project lead (i.e., Project Principal, Project Manager, or Project Architect).
  • Being responsible for the clinical planning healthcare projects of varying scales ranging from acute care, rehabilitation, mental health, ambulatory services, and long-term care projects.
  • Delivering projects through the various design process, following industry best practices, and applying Evidence Based Design.
  • Participating directly in the design, development, and construction reviews of technical projects.
  • Determining and scheduling different stages of the design process according to client and/or construction manager needs.
  • Ensuring that projects meet planning, code, environmental, safety, structural, zoning and aesthetic standards.
  • Being responsible for the facilitation of QA/QC oversight of strategic, facility master planning and medical planning of project design.
  • Meeting with clients to learn of project requirements and project goals, develop architectural concepts/solutions for client goals.
  • Initiate and create designs and relevant documentation with the responsibility of preparing presentation drawings, models, and narratives.
  • Leading, mentoring, and managing project planning and project performance from a business and human resource perspective.
  • Effectively contribute to the studios creative design culture.
  • Overseeing the technical and production aspects of a project.
  • Understanding project financials and contractual commitments.

Position Requirements

  • Registered Architect with OAA.
  • Minimum 10 years of Architecture experience.
  • Demonstration of extensive knowledge and understanding of healthcare design complexity, and knowledgeable of healthcare facility planning, design guidelines and codes.
  • Demonstrated experience leading acute care, ambulatory care, rehabilitation mental health and long-term care projects is required.
  • Experience leading end to end project delivery, all the way through demanding program, strategic project analysis all the way through post occupancy.
  • Experience delivering projects across Canada, particularly within planning and design environment, including with the Health Authorities and various other capital planning and approval steps; similar experience across Canada is also an asset.
  • Experience working on Design Build Finance (P3) project procurement model is beneficial. Interest in gaining experience in new alternate forms of procurement like Alliance or Integrated Project Delivery models is a bonus.
  • Experience with pre-design, business case, feasibility studies and client advisory services (like planning, design and compliance PDC) for healthcare and long-term care projects is beneficial.
  • Demonstrated experience of strong leadership, team and project management skills, including the ability to prioritize work for yourself and others with the achievement of meeting deadlines, adhering to work schedule, fees, and providing a high level of project quality.
  • Strong computer skills are mandatory, particularly with programs such as REVIT, dRofus, and Microsoft suite.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to prepare and deliver presentations to clients and colleagues to acquire new project opportunities, and lead team meetings/activities.
  • Openness to travel – our work (and scheduled projects) includes projects across Canada.

Nice to have

Certifications in Evidence Based Design (EDAC), Lean (LEAN SIX SIGMA- Green belt or higher), LEED Green Associate, Well AP and membership with the American College Healthcare Architects would be seen as favorable.
