Coterie Worklounge provides a completely new service offering to an under-served population. Beginning with a thorough analysis of demographics and current workspace options in Seattle’s downtown core, we identified the need for an alternative workspace for a broader demographic than the nomadic tech workers current offerings primarily target. The design differentiates Coterie by providing a more sophisticated aesthetic, flexible work space options, food service, a balance of public and private space, and several unique meeting space options like the fire chat room. Social space is central to the design. The day opens and closes around the central café/bar as members meet for morning coffee, disperse to work in their chosen environment, then reconvene at the end of the day to socialize and enjoy a drink.
Classic design and tailored detailing enrich the traditional elements of the space using custom penny tile patterning, warm metals, plush upholstery with tufted details, and residential styled lighting and FF&E elements. Members can choose to work on a variety of surfaces ranging from caster base upholstered café chairs to communal tables, bar stools and tables, lounge furniture, banquette seating or more traditional task furniture. This mix allows them to be nomadic throughout the day and select the environment that best suits their task.
The Coterie business model is unique in the market place and there were no points of comparison for interested investors which meant the budget was, by necessity, very lean. The design team worked collaboratively with Coterie to maximize budget. The smart choice of this space in the first place allowed us to leverage existing high end features and detailing on a minimal budget. Smart furniture specifications provide variety in seating and work surfaces, while managing cost. We modified the original two-storey bar design to provide a price conscious solution that is still elegant and takes advantage of the space’s show stopping chandelier. Visitors to the space are always astonished by what we accomplished on such a modest budget. Members are often heard to remark as they leave, “That was the most productive day I’ve ever had!”
